Recent studies have shown it to be a stimulant to the immune system, antiviral, anti exudative, fungistatic, bacteriostatic and anti-inflammatory. The actions of echinacea are due to water-soluble polysaccharides which act by sequestering the attacks of various microbes and allow the body to heal itself. The polysaccharides have an immunostimulant effect which results in the production of leukocytes.
The polysaccharides exert a more specific effect on bacteria that secrete hyaluronidase (like streptococcus). It binds to the hyaluronidase and prevents it from dissolving the intracellular glue and disrupting the cells.
It is most effective when taken fresh, the root chewed slowly or as a poultice applied directly to infected areas. Pills, lozenges and ointments are not as effective.
