Naturopathic philosophy: The naturopathic physician is one who addresses the underlying health of the individual, rather than attacking specific diseases.

Naturopaths as primary care physicians: A primary care physician is the first physician that you are likely to see. He or she will initially evaluate your problem and decide whether to treat it or refer to a specialist. A naturopathic physician is a general practitioner who is trained in natural health care. He or she performs physical examinations. A naturopath can order laboratory tests, x-rays, ultrasounds, MRIs and other diagnostic tests. nutritional and dietary assessments, metabolic analysis, and allergy testing.
Clinical nutrition: A computer term, GIGO, which is an acronym for “garbage in—garbage out” is also appropriate for describing nutrition. A bad diet can be at the root of many health problems. Naturopathic physicians understand that food is the raw material that builds and maintains the body and is the fuel for all of the body’s functions. Eating a healthy diet is an important first step to addressing many health problems. Food and nutritional supplements are useful for treating many medical conditions, without side-effects. Naturopathic physicians frequently use specific individual diets, fasting and cleanses, and nutritional supplements to help their patients regain health.
Herbs and botanical medicine: Many plants have healing properties; naturopathic physicians understand this and use herbs and botanicals to help their patients.
Homeopathic medicine: Homeopathy is a system of healing that has existed for over 200 years. Two of the principles of homeopathy are the law of similars and the law of dilution. The law of similars means that like cures like. The disease is effectively treated by the substance that caused it. In a small amount, the disease agent can signal the body to build its own defenses against the substance, helping it to heal itself. The substance is given in very minute amounts—this is the law of dilution. The more dilute the homeopathic remedy, the more powerful it is.
Physical medicine: Naturopathic physicians use “hands on” therapy to manipulate muscles, other soft tissues and bone. Naturopathic physicians may also recommend therapeutic exercise. Other therapies sometimes included are hydrotherapy, ultrasound, heat and cold.
Oriental medicine: Naturopathic physicians are trained in Oriental style diagnosis, the use of Chinese herbs and acupuncture meridian therapy.
Counseling and stress-management: Naturopathic physician often counsel patients on lifestyle changes and how to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Emotional state and mental attitude are important components of health. Naturopathic physicians are trained to help their patients with this aspect of health.
Depending on the state’s scope of licensing and the naturopathic physician’s training, some naturopaths assist patients with natural childbirth. Some also perform minor surgery, like the repair of superficial wounds, and the removal of foreign bodies (such as warts and cysts) with local anesthesia.
