Restaurant Survival
You can still eat out and enjoy healthy foods. It may take a little more effort than when you eat at home, but it is possible. Your best strategy is to not let yourself get too hungry. We make our worst dietary decisions when we are famished. When you order your meal, get as many vegetables as possible. We are in the middle of a fitness craze, so even fast food restaurants have salads, chicken breasts and other healthy selections. Italian Restaurant
One thing about Italian restaurants--all of the carbohydrates are refined. Even something like spinach fetuccini has refined white flour in it. Avoid white bread and pasta. Order salad. Get any cooked vegetable that you can. You can usually get broiled fish, veal or chicken.
Mexican Restaurant
Avoid fried chips, flautas, chimichangas or anything deep fried. Try to go easy on the cheese. You can have meals like carne asada, which is just meat with vegetables. Many Mexican restaurants have some fine seafood selections. Pinto beans, salad, corn tortillas and guacamole are all acceptable menu selections.
Chinese Restaurant
Avoid egg rolls, fried won ton or anything deep fried. It is also desirable to get them to leave out the MSG. If you react badly to MSG, it is a sign that you need vitamin B6. Some Chinese restaurants have brown rice, which is preferable to having white rice. There are plenty of stir-fried dishes made with vegetables.
Airlines
Most airlines have special vegetarian meals and fruit plates available. You usually have to call in advance to order these.
Fast Food Restaurant
Just because you find yourself in a burger joint or other grease emporium doesn't mean that trying to eat healthily is a lost cause. The popularity of fitness and low-fat menus has improved the selections in most restaurants. Long John Silver has broiled fish and salads. All of the burger chains have salads or salad bars. Broiled chicken is generally available.
It is hard to eat perfectly in most restaurants. You don't usually know the content of salad dressings and sauces. Very few restaurants offer whole grains and most of the carbohydrates are refined. However, make the effort to get the best meal that you can possibly get.
It is a good idea to plan where you are going to eat and not just decide at the last minute. Because of the fitness craze, many restaurants have healthy selections on their menus. If you do not wait until the last minute when you are extremely hungry, you will consistently be able to get healthy meals.
