In Vitro

In vitro is Latin for "in a glass". The term refers to research that is done on cell in a Petrie dish, in a test tube or any test performed in a laboratory and not on a living human or animal. This term is in contrast to "in vivo", which is Latin for "in the living body", and refers to research or testing that is performed on a live human or animal.
