A randomized, placebo-controlled study was published in Spine (36(26):E1659-E1665, December 15, 2011); it looked at 124 subjects with chronic or sub-acute whiplash associated disorder (grade I or II). Subjects were given either 12 electro-acupuncture treatments or sham acupuncture for a period of six months. Follow-up examinations at three months and at six months showed a significant reduction in pain for the group receiving acupuncture compared to the placebo group.
